ALA Chapter Foundation
In May 1998, the Capital Chapter created the ALA CAPITAL CHAPTER FOUNDATION, a public charity operating under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Foundation was formed to provide a permanent funding vehicle for the Chapter's charitable and community activities.
The Foundation operates with tax-deductible charitable contributions from law firms, attorneys, legal administrators, and vendors and friends of the legal community. These contributions support the Foundation's programs. Approximately $35,000 was raised during the 2003 fundraiser held on the dinner cruise ship, Odyssey, for the benefit of Horton's Kids and the Capital Chapter Foundation Scholarship program.
In the Fall of 2003, the Foundation renamed its scholarship program to honor Toni K. Allen, a dedicated Chapter member who passed away. Toni was very active in the Community Services arena, as well as serving as Chapter President and Chair of numerous committees. Thus the scholarship program has been renamed the ALA Capital Chapter Foundation, Toni K. Allen Scholarship Program.
The Foundation plans to continue the tradition of awarding a $10,000 scholarship to a college-bound senior from a D.C. public school. Many previous awardees have gone on to graduate from such illustrious universities as Harvard, Princeton and Georgetown.
The Foundation will also continue the tradition of holding an annual fundraising event for a local charity. Through the successful efforts of administrators, vendors and friends of the legal community, several local charities have benefited over the last eight years. Each year a new charity is chosen & receives the benefits of the Chapter's Community Services Committee's efforts.
