Law firms are operating in an unprecedented era of technology expansion. Document management, billing systems, cloud storage, HRIS platforms, CRM tools, workflow automation, collaboration suites, and now, AI applications are being introduced faster than firms can integrate them. The result? Application sprawl that leaves legal administrators caught in the crossfire, expected to coordinate dozens of systems that were never designed to work together.
This session examines one of the most overlooked operational risks in modern law firms: the growing complexity of disconnected applications. We will explore what happens when core systems fail to communicate, how version control breaks down, and why even the most sophisticated Am Law 100 firms struggle with updates, adoption, and governance.
Participants will learn:
- Where application sprawl originates and why it accelerates as firms adopt more AI and cloud-based tools
- The operational consequences of siloed systems: duplicate work, inconsistent data, compliance exposure, and frustrated attorneys
- Why administrators are increasingly expected to serve as informal system integrators and why this model is unsustainable
- Practical frameworks for regaining control, even without a dedicated applications team
- Soft sale message: how “managed application services” are emerging as a stability solution, helping firms streamline updates, improve integration, and reduce the burden on internal admin teams – case studies and/or stats – recent legal technology survey found that 60%- 80% of Am Law 200 firms are outsourcing IT (fully or partially)
The session will end with a key takeaway: Admins shouldn’t have to be system architects. With the right governance model and support structure, firms can simplify their application ecosystem, improve cross-platform alignment, and free administrative leaders to focus on strategic, high-value work. This presentation will provide clear concepts, real-world scenarios, and actionable steps administrators can use immediately, regardless of their firm’s size, tech stack, or internal resources.
