Session Description:  
Current events have really charged up this conversation.  In the Top 100 Courthouses – the Top 100 Cities – the Minority has become the Majority.  Jurors are more diverse, plaintiffs are more diverse – it is only natural that law firm clients would be asking law firms representing them for more “diverse representation to match the plaintiff and/or the jurors.”  What does “Diversity” mean today?  Finding or sourcing diversity talent and attracting them to your firm is very important.   Even having diverse talent – you need to be able to retain them, what we call “Being More Inclusive” – what this means will also be presented.  Best Practices – what is working in small and medium-sized law firms all across this country – will be presented and discussed.  How to measure progress – metrics – will be a part of this conversation.  We will also spotlight a local firm  Harrity & Harrity, LLP – what has been their diversity and inclusion journey, strategy, and tactics and what is working and not working.  Please join us for a highly interactive, participant-centered workshop.  

This session will highlight best practices which are not cost-prohibitive to small and medium-sized firms.

Learning Objectives:
•    Learn a working definition of Diversity and Inclusion
•    Understand without these definitions and frameworks, it is hard to value and leverage diversity and inclusion in your firm
•    Examine and take back to your firm proven best practices, a diversity and inclusion strategy backbone
•    Learn about the challenges, obstacles, and rewards to being a more diverse and inclusive firm
•    Customize your own diversity and inclusion strategy and plan with metrics – a diversity and inclusion dash board
•    Learn from Harrity and Harrity and their “Lessons Learned” and be able to ask questions

Presenters:
Mauricio Velásquez, MBA, President of the Diversity Training Group – worked with small, medium, and large law firms for over 20 years.  Mauricio has written articles and presented for ALA from local to regional to national conferences (ALA Los Angeles 2016).  Mauricio has published articles for MCCA and presented to many Bar Associations.  Mauricio and his team also count General Counsels and the Judge Advocate General of the US Navy besides dozens of firms.  Mauricio earned a BA from the University of Virginia and an MBA from The George Washington University.
